3ply is a older way of describing wool yarn weight hence the term light fingering which covers a more useful range of gauges in modern knitting patterns.

3ply wools are for delicate projects typically for babies and young children, but not always.

Use when you want a slightly heavier lacey effect or where 2ply weight is too thin and 4ply is too thick. Like Goldilocks really :)
