K368 Cardigan & Hat (newborn to 18 months) 4ply & DK Knitting Pattern

Knitting pattern for a Baby Cardigan and matching hat using a choice of either a 4ply or DK / 8ply weight wool yarn. We recommend a machine washable Merino wool from NZ for softness and to support local producers.

4 sizes from newborn babies and toddlers aged approximately 18 months.

Knitted in a stocking stitch pattern with ribbed hem, cuffs, neck and button bands. Made in pieces from bottom up and seamed at sides and sleeves and along the edge and bands of the hat, this design is suitable for beginner knitters.

Sized to fit age, approximately - to fit chest (cm).  The finished measurement is 5cm larger than the following chest sizes.

• Newborn - 36cm
• 3 months - 41cm
• 6-9 months - 46cm
• 12-18 months - 51cm

Gauge:
If using 4ply yarn: 28 sts and 36 rows over stocking stitch using 3.25mm needles.
If using 8ply / DK yarn: 22 sts and 30 rows over stocking stitch using 4mm needles.

Approx. total yardage:
If using 4ply yarn: 360 to 720 metres (based on 178 metres per ball)
If using 8ply / DK yarn: approx. between 240- 500 metres (based on 120 metres per ball)
Needles sizes: 3mm and 3.25mm for 4ply. 3.75mm and 4mm for 8ply/DK.
Buttons between 3 and 5 depending on size.
Also need: stitch holders & markers, tapestry wool needle for sewing up.

Designed in either a machine washable New Zealand Merino Wool 4ply or DK yarn.
