The Orari River is situated in South Canterbury, New Zealand. It flows from its source in the Four Peaks mountain range, and past the towns of Geraldine and Orari on it’s way out to sea east of Temuka. When it is in flood, the current is much like the stitch pattern on the instep of this sock, with the mini cables depicting where the edges of the river are trying to find their new path.

Orari River Socks are a toe-up unisex ankle sock featuring a gorgeous and simple slipped stitch and cable pattern up the middle of the instep, combined with plenty of stocking stitch to keep it a quick knit.

The pattern uses Judy Becker’s Magic Cast On method and the simple clean lines of the Japanese Short Row Heel.

There are three size options: small, medium and large. They will fit feet that are 9”, 10” and 11” long, respectively.

Supplies:
  • Around 60g of 4ply sock yarn.
  • Eighteen lockable stitch markers
  • Darning needle
  • 2.25mm knitting needles. The instructions are written for magic looping, but you can use your preferred method of sock knitting.

Original design by Vanessa Harper, Creative Director of Hanging Rock Roost  - a local graphic designer, pattern designer and prolific knitter based in Geraldine, South Canterbury in New Zealand.

This pattern is for a printed product.
